A Selayang Municipal Council (MPS) councillor has proposed that a fenced-up recreation park and a jogging track be built along the Sungai Rawang as part of its beautification project.
M.B. Raja said that he would submit his proposal to MPS president Zainal Abidin Azim within the next two weeks.
“The people in Rawang are in dire need of a public park as there is no big public park in the area. The nearest recreation area is in Templer's Park, located about 5km away from Rawang town,” he said.
“The proposed recreation area and jogging track could be a tourists recreation area,” he said.
“The people will also learn to keep the river clean and appreciate it without throwing any rubbish into the river,'' he said.
Raja said that as an avid jogger himself, he found it difficult to jog around Rawang with so many vehicles on the road.
“It would be a great to have a place where the residents in Rawang can enjoy the view of the river without breathing in smoke pollution from vehicles when they jog in the early morning or evenings,'' he said.
At present, the second of a two-phase flood alleviation project in Rawang is being undertaken along Sungai Rawang.
During the first phase, Lafarge Malayan Cement and the Selangor state government successfully relocated 124 squatter families residing along the riverbanks to safer houses in a new residential area in Rawang
The second phase is a river diversion project at a stretch near the SJK (Tamil) Rawang in Jalan Kuala Garing, which will hopefully make Rawang flood-free by next year.
