MIRI: Sarawak Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud lost a friendly bet with developer Tan Sri Ting Pek Khiing when the latter managed to complete the Pujut flyover project in time for the Merdeka celebration, 11 months ahead of schedule.

Speaking after a ceremonial drive on the 498m flyover, Taib, who had challenged Ting during his inspection of the RM45mil project less than two weeks ago, said he was happy despite losing the bet, as Ting was able to expedite the completion.

“Instead of the initial bet of RM10, I am giving him RM70 as he had done well,” he said.

He said the money was a token of his appreciation for the good work put up in Ting, who is the Global Upline Sdn Bhd chief.

Global Upline was awarded the project in February and was scheduled to complete the project by Aug 1 next year.

The company is currently undertaking another flyover project at the Puchong intersection near the city centre and is expected to carry out another infrastructure work worth RM400mil to build a four-lane highway connecting the Kuala Baram industrial area to the airport.

Taib said the Federal Government had agreed to finance the highway project. – Bernama
