PENANG:A drug addict used an obituary advertisement to dupe residents of an apartment block in Perak Road here into donating money for the burial of a man.
Carrying two photocopies of the advertisement, he went from house to house to solicit for donations which he claimed was for the burial of the deceased in the advertisement whom he claimed was a close relative.
A resident became suspicious when the 53-year-old addict said a local Chinese daily had sanctioned the collection.
He called a reporter who happened to be staying at the same block. The reporter checked with his bosses and was told that the newspaper did not allow such house-to-house collection.
A group of residents then apprehended the addict who had been arrested 12 times in the past, mostly for drug-related offences. They handed him over to the Jelutong police station.
The suspect is under remand for a week to facilitate investigations into the case which police have classified as cheating under Section 420 of the Penal Code.
