ALOR STAR: A young housewife, whose left leg was amputated after a road accident here, is still unaware that her mother had been killed and her six-month-old son seriously injured.
Umi Syakila Sobri, 23, who was involved in an accident involving five vehicles that killed eight people on Tuesday, is now warded at the Alor Star Hospital intensive care unit, with her son Mohd Arif Irfan Taqyuddin lying in coma in the next room.
Her husband, Ahmad Taqyuddin Hamzah, 25, said doctors operated on Umi's broken right leg on Tuesday night. Her left leg however could not be saved and was amputated from the knee down.
“When Umi woke up, I told her that her mother was taking care of our son,” he said, adding that he could not bring himself to break the horrible news to Umi yet.
Ahmad, a trader, said doctors told him Mohd Arif suffered a concussion and internal injuries. His mother-in-law Wan Rohani Wan Ibrahim, 54, was buried at about 11am yesterday at Kampung Lubuk Batu, Jitra.
Ahmad said Umi had driven her mother and Mohd Arif in a Kancil to visit a sick relative at the hospital but he did not join them as he was working.
In the 3.53pm accident at Km43.1 of the North-South Expressway near Hutan Kampung toll plaza, a family of seven travelling in a Proton Iswara were killed after a trailer rammed into it. The Iswara was pinned under the trailer as it crash-ed into the Kancil, killing Wan Rohani.
The seven family members were Ilias Salleh, 54, his three children Suraya, 32, Mohd Azlan, 31, and Sawiyah, 27, and three grandchildren Mohd Afif Alias, six, Nurul Izati Alias, four, and one-year-old Uzma Daniel Syahril.
Police yesterday obtained a magistrate court order to remand the 35-year-old trailer driver until June 2.
Kota Star OCPD said police were investigating the case under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act for reckless driving.
It was reported that the driver had fled the scene immediately after the accident. He later surrendered himself at the Alor Star police station and lodged a report over the incident.
