Percussion team drums up winning tune

CLINCHING three of the seven music awards at Kakiseni’s 5th Annual Boh Cameronian Arts Awards on Sunday was a historic moment for Hands Percussion Team.

It was the most significant win for the 24 Season Chinese Drum troupe, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year.

“This is the biggest present for our anniversary,” said its music director, Bernard Goh.

The music category was dominated by two productions: Drum Slices and Broken Bridges, The Musical directed by Joe Hasham.

Hands Percussion’s production, Drum Slices, staged last year, won for Best Group Performance (Instrumental), Best Production Values and Best Original Composition for the piece Emotions.

Drum Slices drew overwhelming response with its power-packed performance by nearly 140 young drummers aged between four and 18 years old.

“We are so proud of them. The team spirit they showed is extraordinary and the hard work they put in is something you can’t imagine,” Goh said.

Over the years, Hands Percussion has engaged a large number of youths in participating actively in music making and staging professional productions. The winning music piece, Emotions – an expressive piece on sorrow, anger, joy and happiness – was written by Goh and 19-year-old students Fu Chen, Hui Min, Muji Lee and Neo Ong.

“To the youths, this is a very big push factor because now they realise that they can do it, but they have to be very determined,” Goh said, adding that the percussion group had to move into the finer details of educating the youths and performance.

Hands won a total of RM3,000, sponsored by Alexis Bistro & Wine Bar, and trophies sponsored by Tumasek Pewter.

“We want to thank the schools and parents for their support. As for the winnings, we plan to hold a gathering since we haven't met up much since the production,” he said.

Next month, Hands Percussion will offer Drum Slices 2, a bigger production with new pieces and more players. Goh said they would play in a hall that could seat 5,000 people, a crowd 10 times bigger than at the first production.

Catch Drum Slices 2 at 8pm on June 8 at Arena of Stars, Genting Highlands. Tickets are priced at RM30, RM40, RM50 and RM70, with attractive rates for Hands Club and Genting World Card members, early birds and bulk purchases of more than 20 tickets.
