THE Air Itam recreation centre in Tasek Gelugor, Penang, famous for its tranquillity and many tree species, is now undergoing a RM1mil facelift to provide better facilities and make it more attractive to visitors.
Sungai Dua state assemblyman Datuk Jasmin Muhamad said yesterday that the project was being undertaken by the Penang Regional Development Authority (Perda) and the state Forestry Department.
He said the centre was now closed to the public to facilitate road upgrading work leading to the centre.
“The work is expected to be completed in August. There will also be a bigger parking area to accommodate more visitors.
“The centre will also offer boat rides for visitors to savour the tranquillity and take a closer look at the flora and fauna along Sungai Jarak and Sungai Perai,” he said.
Jasmin said public toilets at the centre would also be upgraded and contracted out to maintain their cleanliness.
He added that Perda and the Forestry Department would be embarking on an aggressive campaign to promote the centre, locally and abroad, when the project was ready.
More than 100,000 people visited the recreation centre annually before it was closed for upgrading work early this year.
