THE AMbank Group was crowned the Division One champions of the National Banks Sports Council (NBSC) football league after a hard fought 2-0 win over CIMB Bank at the Maybank Sports Complex in Bangi recently.
Following the win, AmBank Group completed its fixtures with four wins and a draw in the six-team league.
AmBank Group, which had upset favourite Maybank 1-0 in the previous league match, needed a draw to be certain of the title.
It had earlier defeated Alliance Bank 5-1, Bank Rakyat 5-0 and drew 2-2 with RHB Bank.
But AmBank Group team manager Mohd Nasir Jaafar had given strict instructions to the players to opt for an attacking game.
“We could have played a defensive game but that could give our opponents advantage,” Nasir said.
In the match against CIMB, after several failed attempts, M. Shashidaran scored from close range to give AmBank Group a 1-0 lead.
In the second half, AmBank Group continued to dominate the match and increased its lead through Norzul Azuan Yunus.
Nasir said their progress in the league was impressive and due to the intensive training programme started two months ago.
He also commended coach Idris Hashim for making the players fighters.
AmBank Group’s next target is the coveted Governor’s Cup considered the prestigious silverware in the banking industry.
Nasir reminded his players to concentrate on the Governor's Cup.
“They should consider winning the Division One title as a beginning.
“They should not be complacent but train harder as the Governor's Cup is a much tougher competition,” he said.
