TWO new legs one in Langkawi and the other in Sabah have been included in the SportExcel Junior Golf Circuit 2007 teeing off on Feb 24.
SportExcel executive director Teng Mui Ngee said a total of 12 legs in the Junior Open category and five legs in Elite categories would be held this year.
We are certainly happy with the increase in the number of legs in the junior golf circuit, as it means our juniors will get more competitive exposure. We have also created an Elite category for the better juniors, said Teng.
In addition to the junior circuit, Sportexcel will also be organising the Asia Pacific Junior matchplay and AmBank Group-Crosscreek International junior championships.
The junior circuit, inaugurated in 1992 to groom players for the country, has five categories boys Under-18, boys Under-15, girls Under-18, boys and girls Under-12 and Under-8.
Teng said they were pleased with the progress made by the players in the junior circuit.
It was a dream when we launched the circuit in 1992. But several players have progressed and played for the country in the SEA Games, Asian Games and World Cup. Some have also made it as professionals, said Teng.
The prominent players include Ben Leong, Airil Rizman Zahari and S. Sivachandran. The current players in the national squad are also graduates from the junior circuit.
Besides golf, Sport-Excel also organises squash, bowling, cycling, shooting, cricket, swimming, diving, rhythmic gymnastics, artistic gymnastics, tennis, sepak takraw and athletics.
