Chef creates Xmas salad


HUMMING along to a Christmas song, celebrity chef Ismail Ahmad gaily put together the ingredients for his Ho Ho Ho Salad. 

“With salad, you have to be creative. You can make your own dressing without any need for mayonnaise from a bottle because that is very fattening,” he said during a Pensonic cooking demonstration at the SEC Electricare Home Sweet Home 2006 fair at the Penang International Sports Arena (PISA) in Relau yesterday. 

The chef put garlic, big onions, English mustard, orange juice, olive oil, tomato paste, oregano, sugar, salt and white vinegar into the blender. 

A whirr of the machine later, the salad dressing was ready to go with a bowl of fresh salad that the chef had prepared earlier.

Cooking in butter and oil in a covered multi cooker was an assortment of chopped vegetables comprising carrots, potatoes, leeks, onions, celery and garlic. 

Stirring in wheat flour, the chef ensured the vegetables were properly cooked before adding water, salt, sugar and cubed stock and bringing the soup to boil. 

After processing the cooked vegetables in a blender, the puree was returned to the multi cooker, Pepper, oregano, more butter and fresh cream were added to complete this Cream of Vegetable Soup. 

Paper plates, plastic forks and spoons were then distributed to the visitors at the Pensonic booth for them to sample Chef Ismail's salad and soup. 

Earlier in the day, the chef presented cooking demonstrations for making sweet pancakes and chicken chop with mushroom sauce. 

The four-day fair at PISA features more than 15 companies promoting electronic goods, communication tools and computer products. 

Santa Claus will be making an appearance today with freebies to be given away. 

The fair, which ends today, is open from 11am to 9pm.
