Books for kids from welfare homes

THE MPH Bookstore’s annual charity event Share-A-Gift is back with more orphanages chosen to participate in the event.

Initiated in 1992, the Share-A-Gift programme puts the names and details of the children from the participating orphanages on a Christmas tree placed from Nov 15 to Dec 15 at the entrance of each MPH Bookstore.

Shoppers just need to pick a child’s name, buy a suitable book based on the personal information provided about the child and write their message on the card while MPH wraps the book and send the presents to the respective homes before Christmas.

Several corporate bodies have already pledged to help some of the homes set up a library, namely Wyeth, CIMB Bank, RHB Securities, Clarins and Smart Kids.

To encourage the public to purchase the book gifts, customers receive a RM5 MPH book voucher with every purchase of RM80 (RM60 for MPH Readers’ Circle members).

This year, 50 welfare homes and orphanages have been chosen to participate in the programme, which will culminate in a Share-A-Gift Charity Carnival on Dec 16 from 10am to 4pm at the Crowne Plaza Mutiara Kuala Lumpur.

“We still think that reading is the most priceless gift one can give to a child but we are also aware of the homes’ need for financial support in order to maintain and run their homes,” said MPH marketing manager Renee Koh.

“That’s why we are having the charity carnival and hope we can raise RM100,000 to be donated to all 50 participating homes. MPH is giving RM50,000 worth of books as its contribution to the programme.”

Coupons for the fundraiser carnival are available at any MPH outlet in the Klang Valley at RM20 per booklet.

Proceeds from the sale will go entirely to the Share-A-Gift fund. The coupons can be used at the carnival to redeem food and beverage, play games, handicraft items, books and other reading materials.

For the carnival itself, there will be lots of activities ranging from face painting, storytelling sessions, movie screenings by United International Pictures, performances by the PJ Chamber Orchestra, Christmas Carolling and appearances by costumed Star Wars characters.

There will be lucky draws too at the event, with prizes like vacation packages to Club Med Cherating sponsored by Club Med and the grand prize of an exclusive Tokyo Disney Special package for two sponsored by Japan Airlines.

Also supporting the event are The Star, TV3 Kids, Ribena, Direct Access, Scholastic, Crowne Plaza Mutiara Kuala Lumpur, Brabons Entertainment, Mad Science, United International Pictures and Art Attack Magazine.
