LOSING his father at an early age has opened the heart of businessman Hew Hock Hin to charity work.
Hew, 71, has been involved in charity work for the past 30 years and sits on the board of several as-sociations and societies.
His passion however lies with Rumah Sejahtera Jelapang, which he has dedicated 30 years of his life to and presently serving as its chairman.
The home in Jelapang, Ipoh, which was founded in 1960, was once in danger of being shut down 10 years ago when it had eight residents left.
Hew, who was a committee member then, and his friend Gordon Choo, who is now the home’s secretary, then embarked on fund raising activities to sustain the home. The home now houses 49 senior citizens.
“Where would the residents go if we were to close the home?” he asked.
Hew said they had the public to thank for keeping the place open as the home depends on donations.
“We need RM7,000 to RM8,000 a month to run the home,” he said during a senior citizens’ celebration at the home recently.
During the celebration, the home received a RM50,000 donation from Hess Oil & Gas Sdn Bhd, represented by senior joint venture specialist Tsang Lai Yee.
The residents enjoyed lunch, karaoke singing sessions and sang a birthday song for friends who shared the same birthday month.
The home, located in Jalan Tai-ping, Jelapang, can be contacted at 05-5262209 or 05-2411973.
