KUANTAN: A new hybrid padi seedling, which can generate at least three times the present yields, will be available commercially soon.

Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Seri Dr Jamaluddin Jarjis said a local firm in Rompin, using methods from China and Philippines, is producing the new hybrid.

He said although the hybrid was still in the experimental stage, it has proven successful in increasing yields.

“I was surprised at the result as research and development work on the project started just six months ago,” he said.

He said the hybrid could produce up to nine tonnes of padi per hectare.

Dr Jamaluddin, who is also Rompin MP, lauded the firm’s initiative and said he had encouraged the firm to invest on the project.

He said the firm had acquired 202ha of land in Rompin to conduct the research.

He said that Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Tuanku Syed Putra Jamalullail would make an official visit to Rompin on Dec 1 to view the success of the project.

Dr Jamaluddin said, during the royal visit, the King would perform a ground-breaking ceremony to build a research and development centre.

He said the area would be called Rompin Paddy Barn where mass production of the hybrid would be carried out for the benefit of local farmers.

“We hope the advent of the technology would help increase the income of farmers there,” he said.

Dr Jamaluddin said the centre would work closely with the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute on the project.
