Couple seek help for epileptic daughter

HARI Raya Aidilfitri is a joyous occasion for many but not for a couple in Kulim who are having a hard time looking after their epileptic 13-year-old daughter.

Odd-job worker Shaik Daud Mohd Hanifah, 42, said they have been tube-feeding their daughter Noor Mariam since she was two.

“She developed epileptic fits after contracting fever and her spine is severely bent.

“The fits have also resulted in swollen legs and hands,” he said after receiving RM500 aid from Padang Serai MP Datuk Lim Bee Kau at her service centre in Kulim.

Shaik Daud said his daughter would soon undergo an operation at the Kulim Hospital to rectify her spine but her fits must first be treated.

“A decision on the surgery will only be made after Hari Raya,” he said.

Shaik Daud said he needs to spend RM600 a month to feed his daughter milk, pay for her medical expenses and travelling expenses from their Ladang Sungai Ular home to the hospital.

“My salary is less than RM500 per month. I also have to take care of other two schoolgoing children,” he said.

He said his wife Fatimah Abdullah, 47, could not work as she had to take care of Noor Mariam.

“We received RM150 aid from the Social Welfare Department but it is not enough,” he said.

Lim urged the public to help the family.

Anyone wanting to lend a helping hand can contact Lim’s service centre at 04-4914860.
