MACAU and Singapore will add foreign flavour to the inaugural Ultimate Squasher Open squash championships at the National Squash Centre in Bukit Jalil on Oct 28-29.
Organising chairman Sandra Wu said 21 players - 11 from Macau and 10 from Singapore- have confirmed participation in the two -day championships.
We are surprised with the encouraging response from Macau and Singapore. In fact, we could have received more entries if we had promoted the championships.
Nevertheless, the response has given us an additional boost and we want to make the championships a success, said Wu.
The championships has two categories - Corporate for men and women and International doubles - and. to make the championships more interesting, Ultimate Squasher have limited participation to social players only.
Wu said national players are not eligible to play in the Corporate category.
However, national players are allowed to play in the International doubles.
Our aim is to attract social players. We want to see more social players taking an interest in competitive squash.
In other words, we want to promote squash as a sport for all, said Wu.
Cotra Enterprises, the distributors of Vitagen in Malaysia, and Wilson are the sponsors of the championships.
Cotra Enterprises deputy general manager Michael Ong said they have been involved in Ultimate Squasher junior development programmes before.
We are happy to be part of the programme and we want to play a part in the promotion of squash in Malaysia,said Ong.
Celcom , Digi ,Sime Darby , Shell , Ken Holdings, Bank Negara, Great Eastern and Mix Fm have confirmed participation in the Corporate category.
National players Sharon Wee, Elvinn Keo, Ivan Yuen, Choong Kam Hing, Joannah Yue andSerene Lee have also entered for the international doubles.
