Focus on upgrading English

AS part of the company’s ''Touching Hearts'' initiative, Unilever’s employees helped to upgrade Sekolah Kebangsaan Bangsar’s reading room.

This was to provide the pupils with a more conducive environment for learning and nurture the reading habit.

The employees worked together with the staffof the school for three months to refurbish the reading room.

“While the community service initiative of most companies are management driven, ‘Touching Hearts’ is 100% employee driven,” said Unilever’s director of Corporate Relations and Human Resources, Nik Mustapha Nik Mohamed.

“Doing good for the community and the world reinforces what we do for Unilever as a company. ‘Touching Hearts’, which was launched in 2004, is all about ethically, voluntarily and sincerely contributing to the community.

“Social and environmental challenges present us opportunities to fulfil our social obligation,” he added.

Upgrading and refurbishing the reading room is not the first project that Unilever has done for the school.

“It has supported the school by raising funds to buy a van for the school’s activities as well as organising UPSR workshops and motivational talks for pupils.

The school was adopted by the company for its community projects because of its proximity to Unilever’s building.

The focus for this year’s projects is to enhance the standard of English at the school.
