THE British Graduates Association Malaysia (BGAM) has once again risen to the occasion to raise funds for a good cause, just like they had done in 2004. This time around, it is for patients in need of haemodialysis treatment.
A Royal Charity Dinner was held on Aug 5 at Shangri-la Hotel, aimed at raising sufficient funds to set up a new haemodialysis service centre in Balakong to cater especially for the poor in the surrounding towns of Serdang, Bangi, Ulu Langat and Kajang. The dinner was also a get-together for many graduates of the various British universities.
The funds raised by BGAM will be utilised by the St John’s Ambulance Association, which will be involved in the setting up and administration of the new centre. The first aid association has worked extensively in the field of haemodialysis service.
The lavish royal event was graced by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Tuanku Syed Putra Jamalullail and Raja Pemaisuri Agong Tuanku Fauziah Tengku Abdul Rashid.
Among others present were BGAM president Tun Mohd Hanif Omar, Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah, British High Commissioner to Malaysia William Boyd McCleary, British Council Malaysia director Dr Gerry Liston, Tan Sri Vincent Tan, Datuk Nazir Razak, Datuk Roger Tan and Datuk Dr Low Bin Tick.
A total of RM150,000 was raised at the dinner with contributions from corporate bodies as well as individuals.
Tan Sri Vincent Tan donated RM50,000 on his own account and another RM50,000 on behalf of Berjaya Group while Mohd Hanif contributed RM15,000.
HSBC Malaysia, Genting Bhd and General Corporation Bhd donated RM10,000 each and Tanjung PLC contributed RM5,000.
The dinner was also a conferment ceremony for Nazir and Tan, who were recognized as Honorary Fellows.
Nazir graduated from the University of Bristol with a Bachelor of Science and obtained a Masters in Philosophy from Cambridge University. He is currently managing director of CIMB, Malaysia’s second largest financial services group.
Tan is the chairman and CEO of Berjaya Group Berhad.
The night ended with music performances as well as a special appearance by stand-up comedian Jit Murad.
