Ismail lives up to 'Sportsboy' tag

SPORTSBOY of the Year 2005 Ismail Shafie hogged the limelight once again when he was declared the best all-round male athlete of the 24th Kota Star Combined Schools athletics championships at the Sekolah Tunku Abdul Rahman school ground in Alor Star recently. 

The SMK Mergong Ismail Fourth Former bagged four gold medals in the meet.  

Fresh from his victories in the International Young Athletes championships in Australia where he won two golds in the 100m and 200m hurdles, the 16-year-old won the Class One 110m hurdles, long jump, 100m sprint and anchored his school to victory in the 4x100m relay. 

In the Girls section, Class Two athlete Syazwana Marzuki, who also won four golds, was adjudged the best female athlete of the meet. 

The SMK Mergong student won the 100m, 200m, 400m and anchored her school to victory in the 4x100m relay. 

Meanwhile, SMK Mergong emerged as the top school in the district with an overwhelming medal tally of 30 gold, 20 silver and five bronze medals while their closest rivals, SMK Seri Pantai and SMK Pokok Sena, could only manage five gold medals each. 

In the primary school category, PKG Telok Kechai emerged champions with eight gold, five silver and seven bronze medals while PKG Langgar were a close second with a 7-4-8 tally.
