NINETY-two-year-old Lim Guay Choo was the belle of the ball when she belted out the evergreen song ‘You Are My Sunshine’ at a belated Mother’s Day do at Wan Ching Yuen Old Folk’s Home in Penang.
Lim had the 60 other residents of the home singing along with gusto.
Lim said that she enjoyed her life at the home. She has been staying there for 10 years.
“It’s better than being at home. I don't want to go back home,” she said.
Home supervisor Kang Sok Meng said Lim had two children but they could not look after her.
The residents were treated to a sumptuous vegetarian lunch.
The event was hosted by Deputy Minister of Culture, Arts and Heritage Datuk Wong Kam Hoong and his wife Datin Betty Lee Sau Leng.
Wong was not present as he was in Kuala Lumpur for another engagement.
Lee paid tribute to mothers, saying there were many mothers who did not have the chance to celebrate Mother’s Day as they had been placed in welfare homes.
She then handed out carnations to the female residents.
The male residents were also given flowers in view of the coming Father’s Day on June 18.
