Overgrown lalang adds to woes

THE flood problem in Kampung Sungai Dua in Jalan Batu Arang, Rawang, can be solved if residents and the Selayang Municipal Council (MPS) hold a gotong -royong to clean up clogged drains in the area.

Selayang municipal councillor P. Kamalanathan, who made this suggestion, said the village was prone to floods because of its low-lying location.

“Just a simple cleaning and maintenance of the drain by MPS will help stop the flood,” said Kamalanathan, who visited the site on Monday (May 15).

Kamalanathan said residents had complained to him that the drain in the area was overgrown with lalang

“They said that when it rains the water would rush down next to the drain and cause the only entry and exit road to the village to flood,” he said.

Sungai Dua village development and security committee (JKKK) chairman M. Sadasivam said about 93 families had been given lots to stay in the village.

“Now, residents are afraid to stay here because of flood for the last three years. I hope it can be solved in two months.

“Last month, I met Rawang assemblyman Datuk Tang See Hang and he promised to get water supply and electricity for residents by the end of this year. If this is done, most of the residents could build their houses and move in,” said Sadasivam.
