THOUSANDS of devotees thronged the Sri Selva Vinayagar Temple in Prai in conjunction with the Chitra-pournami festival (celebrated on the full moon of Chithi- rai month in the Tamil calen-dar).
Temple president S. Somu said the festival which fell on Friday kicked off with a flag raising ceremony on the eve.
He said special prayers were conducted at the temple to mark the Chitrapournami which began at 8am on Friday and ended early Sunday morning.
Devotees fulfilled their vows by carrying kavadis and paal kudam (milk pots) from the Sri Muniswarar Temple at Jalan Baru to the Sri Selva Vinayagar Temple.
”The highlight of the event was the chariot procession when the statue of Lord Muruga was taken on a 15km journey on Saturday,” he said.
Hindus offered food and drinks to devotees when the chariot passed by their areas.
About 5,000 coconuts were broken along the way by devotees as thanksgiving for their fulfilled vows.
The chariot passed through Taman Indrawasih, Chai Leng Park, Jalan Baru, Kampung Ma-nis, Prai Garden, Taman Senan-gin, Prima Prai and Prai Indah apartments before returning to the temple just after midnight.
