Malacca aims for 30 Sukma gold medals

MALACCA: Malacca targets to win 30 gold medals at the forthcoming Sukma XI scheduled from May 24 to June 4 in Kedah.

State Youth and Sports Committee chairman Datuk R. Raghavan said the target was set to break last year’s record.

“We expect to win medals from gymnastics, self-defence, swimming and athletics,” he said.

Malacca, which garnered a total of 24 gold medals in Sukma last year, is sending 374 participants for the games this year.

Raghavan also said there will be cash rewards from the state for those who clinched medals.

Deputy state Youth and Sports Committee chairman Datuk Chong Tam On will lead the contingent for the games.

Raghavan also said the state was looking for funds to build a RM20mil indoor stadium in Krubong.

“This is to prepare the state which will host Sukma in 2010,” he said.
