Salak South folk plagued by overflowing sewers

FOR the past three weeks, residents in Salak South, especially those living near Jalan Besar, found overflowing drainage and sewerage systems near their homes when it rained.

Should there be a flood, then the area gets messy and requires massive clean-up works.

Indah Water Konsortium Sdn Bhd (IWK) sent a team to find out the root cause of the problem. They found sand and stone blocking the neighbourhood's sewerage system.

Kok and residents check out a clogged manhole.

Seputeh MP Teresa Kok, who was present during the investigation, said construction works at the KL-Putrajaya Highway were causing the blockages.

“Debris from works near Kuchai Lama is blocking the main pipes and this was causing the manholes to overflow in this part each time after a downpour,'' she said.

IWK head of communications Amin Lin said he would meet heads of the Drainage and Irrigation Department as well as the highway concessionaire to find a permanent solution to the problem.

“For the moment, we will minimise the flow by pumping water from the affected area to another.''
