SELANGGAU (Sarawak): Dayaks have been told that if they vote for any Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) or Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP) candidates in the coming polls they are voting for a new Dayak unity.
Deputy Minister in the Prime Ministers Department Joseph Entulu said this was because the two parties were set to merge after the election.
Let us thus give our due support and endorsement to the new political entity that will emerge when the two Dayak based parties merge, he said after a unity and goodwill night organised by the National Unity Department at Rh Muda Lunyang in Ladang Empat Selangau/Mukah Road here on Thursday night.
He said it was the proper thing for the two to merge as they shared almost identical struggles and objectives.
Besides, we come from the same root, being offshoots of Sarawak National Party (SNAP) which is in the Opposition now.
Entulu, who is also Selanggau Member of Parliament, said PRS and SPDP with their merging plan had the noble intention of uniting the Dayaks under one big political platform.
We are currently too fragmented, being members of every political party in the state. When we unite under a larger platform, we can have a larger voice in the state.
He said there was no need for the Dayaks to join new and yet to be registered Dayak parties like Malaysian Dayak Congress (MDC) or SNAP.
These parties will only serve to divide the Dayaks further.
He said their leaders claimed they were fighting to protect Dayak interests.
But when you are outside the state, nobody will bother to listen. This is the reality which we ourselves have experienced when we were in the Opposition, he said.
He reminded voters to give full support to the incumbent John Sikie Tayai whom PRS hoped to renominate to defend the Kakus seat in the coming election.
PRS president Datuk Seri Dr James Jemut Masing and John Sikie were among those present at the function. Bernama
