PENANG: Work on the Penang Outer Ring Road (PORR) will start at the Jalan Udini roundabout near the Regional Centre for Education in Science and Mathematics (Rescam) here.
State Public Works, Utilities and Transportation Commit-tee chairman Datuk Koay Kar Huah said some of the government quarters in the Rescam compound would be affected by the RM1.02bil project.
“But the process of land acquisition and compensa-tion has not started yet,” he said.
“We do not know what kind of technical problems may occur when the project kicks off,” he added.
Koay said this yester- day after launching a ma- nual on the maintenance of government office buildings, prepared by the state Public Works Department (JKR).
He was asked to comment on the recent announce- ment by Works Minister Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu that an agreement would be signed next month bet- ween the ministry and PORR developer Peninsular Metro-Works Sdn Bhd.
Koay said the ring road would cut across Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah and go through Bukit Gelugor to Island Glades.
“A few bungalows in Bukit Gelugor will be affected by the project,” he said.
“We have also asked the developer to prepare a geo-technical report for any hill-cutting activity in Island Glades.
Koay said the 17km dual-lane highway would pass through Bandar Baru Air Itam, Kampung Melayu and Reservoir Garden in Air Itam, Batu Gantung, the Penang Municipal Park, Gottlieb Road, Gurney Drive and Jalan Pangkor.
“About 60% of the ring road will be elevated,” Koay said, adding that the project was expected to be completed by 2010.
Earlier, state JKR director Abdullah Abdul Rahman said Penang was the first state to produce a manual on the maintenance of government office buildings.
He said the manual would be distributed to more than 100 federal and state departments in Penang.
