SITIAWAN: Several Indah Water Konsortium (IWK) officials came under fire from residents over a developer’s move to connect sewerage pipes to the treatment plant in their housing estate here.
The residents of Taman Pega-wai and Taman Desa Bintang here were unhappy with IWK for allowing the developer to start pipe-laying work although approval had not been given.
Among the complainants was Deputy Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Kong Cho Ha, who lives in Taman Pegawai.
“The road has been cut for the sewer line two weeks ago.
“And now you are telling me that you received an application from the developer only this week to connect the pipes from his project to our existing plant?” Kong said after an explanation by Ipoh IWK certification manager Teah Onn Han during a dialogue with offi- cials of IWK and Energy, Water and Communications Minis-try’s Sewerage Services Depart-ment on Saturday.
A resident said she was given the run-around between IWK and the Manjung Municipal Council when she complained about an overflow at the plant since Chinese New Year, adding the problem was only resolved on Friday evening with the help of MCA district councillor Foo Thean Song.
She said the two housing estates were located at flood-prone areas and a leak in the sewerage pipes would be disastrous to public health.
The residents were also upset when Teah earlier insisted that the plan for the developer to use the existing treatment plant would not be reviewed.
However, the situation became calm after the Sewerage Services Department deputy director-general Mohd Ridhuan Ismail gave an assurance that the decision would be reviewed.
