PENANG: A magistrate’s court will hold an inquest on March 28 into the death of a detainee who allegedly suffered a heart attack while in police custody.
Magistrate Fatimah Rubi’ah Ali fixed the date after Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) Abdul Razak Musa requested that the court set a hearing date for the inquest.
The request was made following Human Rights Movement of Malaysia’s (Suhakam) decision on Jan 15 to hold a public inquiry into the death of A. Ravindran who died while in police custody at Jalan Patani on Nov 19, 2005. Suhakam’s public inquiry has been called off because of the inquest.
Ravindran, 41, a Simpang Renggam centre detainee since 2002, was released following a successful habeas corpus application last year. He was re-arrested outside the High Court here and was sent to the police lock-up in October last year. He died in detention within a month.
