PENANG: Bukit Gelugor MP Karpal Singh, confined to a wheelchair, does not want his physical condition to prevent him from being out of touch with his constituents.
He said he was still capable of serving his constituents and if necessary, he would go about serving them on his wheelchair.
“Where my presence is required, I will go there by wheelchair to serve the people,” he said.
“By next month, a wheelchair ramp will be set up at my service centre in Bandar Baru Air Itam.”
He added that the service centre at Desa Mawar Baru, Lintang Kampung Melayu 2, had been operating as usual even though his physical presence had not been felt there since he was confined to a wheelchair following an accident on Jan 29, last year.
Speaking to reporters at his home in Jalan Utama yesterday, Karpal Singh thanked Hindus who undertook vows during Thaipusam for his health.
“Prayers from any community will help me, and I welcome them,” he said.
He said although he was not of the Hindu faith, he made it a point to return from Kuala Lumpur to take part in this festival and was present to welcome the silver chariot bearing the statue of Lord Muruga as it passed by his house on Friday.
Outside his house, Karpal Singh had also set up a thaneer panthal (refreshment stall) for devotees in his capacity as DAP chairman.
