KUANTAN: Lawyers have been warned that stern disciplinary action can be taken against them if they offer discounts on legal fees for drafting hire purchase agreement.

Pahang Bar Council president Mohd Sazali Abdul Aziz said that lawyers should think twice before giving discounts on legal fees that involved non-contentious matters as it would affect the profession.

He said the special notice by the Bar Council distributed to 267 lawyers in the state on conveyancing fees and the no-discount ruling was very clear.

“If they are found to have breached the ruling, they can face stern action including disqualification as practicing lawyers.

“Even if they have to compete among themselves to get business, they must respect the council’s decision stated in Order Seven,” he told a press conference here on Wednesday.

On the legal fees, Mohd Sazali said the rate was 1% for projects valued RM100,000 and above.
