SQUASH Rackets Association of Selangor (SRAS) had more reason to celebrate during the festive season.
Several of their players who are preparing for next years Sukma in Alor Star dominated the National Junior squash championships held in Kuala Lumpur recently.
National juniors Ivan Yuan and P.T. Pushppa Devi won the boys Under-17 and girls Under-17 titles respectively in the championships. Promising junior Yong Sue Ann won the girls Under 13 title.
Another national junior Tan Yan Xin made it more memorable when she won the Nicol David Cup competition held in Penang.
SRAS secretary Mary Ong said they were delighted with the players results in the competitions.
Several other players were also impressive. For instance, Mohamed Zul Azri gave a good account against Mohamed Rafiee in the boys Under-15 final. Mohamed Zul Azri is only 13 but he managed to match his opponent in the closely contested match. Though he lost he should be commended. He is one of the most improved players in our programme, said Ong.
In the national junior championships, Yuan, a student of Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS), put up a gallant display and outclassed Peraks Choong Kam Hing 10-8, 1-9, 10-8, 9-5.
Pushppa Devi, a Form Four student of SMK Bukit Bandaraya, emerged the winner in the girls Under-17 category with a 9-4, 5-9, 9-1, 9-2 win over Kuala Lumpurs Zulijah Azan in the final.
Pint-sized Yong, a 10-year-old lass, was in her element against Peraks Julia Cheah winning 9-4, 9-0, 9-5 in the girls Under-13 final.
SRAS president Datuk Mohamed Aini taib said their players were on the right track to do well in other competitions.
Our players success was due to the joint efforts between SRAS and Petaling Jaya Municipal Council. Our development programmes have produced a lot of promising players, said Mohamed Aini.
