Fish dish top on first Malaysian Idol list

Celebrities share the same passion for food as we do. My Choiceis a column where the rich and famous break bread with us. Thecountry’s first Malaysian Idol star, Jaclyn Victor admits herweakness for fish dishes. 

SINGERS are constantly told to abstain from certain types of food and drink to preserve their vocal cords. 

Jac is a fish lover and there’s no better lunch for her than to tuck Into the Norwegian Cod Fish Allamandeat Jake’s Charbroil Steaks in Damansara.

An unperturbed Jaclyn Victor however eats and drinks whatever she fancies up to the day she is scheduled to perform.  

Adored by Malaysians young and old, the first Malaysian Idol even confesses to going through prolonged eating phases. 

We are comfortably seated at one of the booths at Jake’s Charbroil Steaks in Damansara, Kuala Lumpur where it is past lunchtime.  

Further down the aisle is Jac’s favourite booth that accommodates a party of four. 

Jac, as she is popularly known, had earlier arrived at the restaurant with mum Maggie Victor and close friend-cum-Malaysian Idol 1 finalist Rydiana Abdul Rahim or Rydee in tow.  

Clad in a sexy fuchsia top and hip-hugging jeans, the petite singer had attracted attention from afar while the staff members at Jake’s were ecstatic.  

Warm and down-to-earth, it is evident that Jac who rose from humble beginnings has captured a place in many Malaysian hearts. 

Music aside, Jac loves her food.  

“Fish has been tops on my list for years and after sampling the fish dishes at Jake’s a few years ago, I got hooked.  

“A friend introduced me to the restaurant,” she added. 

Lunch that day was a toss-up between the Seabass and Norwegian Cod Fish Allamande but Jac quickly opted for the Norwegian Cod Fish Allamande.  

Once the order was placed, she rubbed her hands in glee while declaring “I am starving”. 

When I prod her on her favourite food, Jac admitted loving chillies. 

“I love to spice up my food with bird’s eye chillies and I enjoy Thai food especially tomyam

“There is also this North Indian tandoori stall in Taman Tun Dr Ismail that mum and I like where the chicken is plump and juicy.  

“We also dine often at the D’Tandoor in Damansara these days,” Jac said. 

Jac also favours her mum’s vindaloo but the ultimate question is, does the singer who has captivated Malaysians with her powerful vocals, cook? 

“My cooking skills are good enough to save me from starvation but if I chose, I can survive on milk and scrambled eggs.  

“When mum was working, I had to cook after returning from school so I followed her instructions closely.”  

For dessert, Jac’s preference is the Brownie Ala Mode with Vanilla Ice Cream.  

Looking at her favourite dessert, she reflected on the good old days when during one of her phases, she even ate lots of Cream-O biscuits and drank Vitagen. 

On the music front, Jac is busy working on her second album, having released her debut effort, Gemilang that recently went gold. Meanwhile, her fan club, Jacsville, was launched in February.
