Public must discard apathy to progress

THE letter “Discard Third World mentality to reach 2020 target” by Raymond Lim on Oct 14 prompted me to add my thoughts on the issue.

Besides the Government, I find the apathy from the public itself disturbing.

Some eateries are filthy, yet I see people enjoying their food despite the smell from the drains and the obvious filth around them.

Are we so hardened we have accepted this standard of hygiene as the norm?

The people have to change their mindset if we are to be ready for 2020 target.

Does living in this part of the world mean we can compromise our value systems at every turn?

This sad state of affairs is evident in every area of our lives. The way companies are run; the way we drive and now children learning that throwing rubbish indis-criminately is all right as long as it’s not in their own compound.

We have a long way to go, Malaysians.
