TAIPING: Word on the sighting of “dangerous-looking” big fishes brought hordes of visitors to the Lake Gardens here yesterday.
The presence of an injured monitor lizard with hind limbs said to have been snapped by some fish further added substance to the claim.
A Taiping Municipal Council worker said he was in the water repairing a broken bund when he heard a splash and saw a big reddish-looking fish heading towards him.
“I sprinted to safety and told my colleagues about it,” he said yesterday.
But Taiping Zoo director Dr Kevin Lazarus said that based on the description by council workers, the fishes could be the arapaimas.
“Someone could have reared them, found them hard to maintain and released them into the Lake Gardens,” Dr Lazarus.
He said the fishes were not dangerous.
He also discounted the possibility that the fishes could have escaped from the zoo which had nine arapaimas in one of its ponds.
Dr Lazarus said his men would try to catch the fishes and place them in one of the ponds in the zoo.
