PENANG’S leading book store, Popular, has opened its latest outlet in the state.
The book store at the Gurney Plaza is the company's second flagship store after the one in Selangor.
The new outlet was opened to mark Popular’s presence in the state for the past 15 years.
Apart from the Gurney Plaza store, Popular has six other outlets in the state.
The new store has a total floor area of 22,000 sq feet, offering books, stationery, audio-visual and multimedia products as well as a special corner dedicated for children's activities.
State Executive Councillor Datuk Dr Toh Kin Woon, who was present at the opening, said parents should encourage their children to read by setting a good example.
“I hope we are able to organise some international book fairs in future,” he said, adding that elements like a limited market and budget were the major obstacles that had to be over- come.
Also present were assistant island district education officer Toh Kim Hock, Gurney Plaza director Phuah Choon Meng, Popular Book Company (M) Sdn Bhd managing director, Chou Cheng Ngok and its executive director Lim Lee Ngoh.
A total amount of RM10, 000 was also donated to Jit Sin High School and SRJK(C) Jelutong each.
Jit Sin High School is short of RM2.5mil to build a five-storey hostel while SRJK(C) Jelutong is planning to build a new school block at a cost of RM1mil.
