Cousin: Sicilia wanted to give parents a better life

SUNGAI PETANI: She had wanted to become an accountant to make a better life for herself and her poor parents in Sabah.

But Sicilia @ Vanesa Grant Francis, 24, a second-year Universiti Putra Malaysia student, did not get to realise her dream.

She was killed in an accident along the North-South Ex-pressway, about 5km from here, after returning from Sintok with her friend Azizah Meera Mydin, 24, and her brother Mohd Jabir, 25, in their 4WD at about 2.50am on Monday.

A container truck crashed into the 4WD which had been hit by a lorry moments earlier.

Mohd Jabir was also killed, Azizah was seriously injured. Also killed was Mohd Shazwan who stopped his car to help the victims.

Four other people, including Shazwan's father-in-law Hanafi Lazim and brother-in-law Mohd Anuar who were nearby, were injured.

Sicilia’s body had been flown back to Kota Kinabalu from Penang. Her cousin Chindra Bagah, 38, who arrived to claim the body said Sicilia's parents, farmers Francis Gabil and Koyob Sakandar, were both in their 70s.

“Sicilia used to tell me that after her graduation she would give her parents a better life,” Bagah said.

Hanafi, 53, who was warded at the Sungai Petani Hospital for injuries, said: “While helping the victims, I saw a container truck swerving and heading towards us but it was too late for any of us to move out of the way,” he said.
