Seafood attracts crowd to annual fair

The island of Hokkaido with its magnificent and stunning landscape is also famous for its food.

For the sixth year running, Isetan is bringing a taste of Hokkaido to Kuala Lumpur with a food promotion at its KLCC supermarket until July 17.

“For the first time, the Hokkaido Fair is held to promote our summer specialities,” said Isetan merchandising manager Motoyuki Tsuji.

“Previously, the fair was held only during the autumn months. A team of 13 chefs and food retailers from some of Hokkaido’s most well-known restaurants and stores has been flown in this year.

“As much as we would love to have people experience the charms of this island here, we offer them only a small taste of Hokkaido!”

A variety of dried seafood, boxes of fresh sushi, creamy ice cream in crispy wafer cones and pastries are on sale.

The main draw is certainly the seafood. With miles of beaches and a bustling port and fishing industry, Hokkaido has long been recognised for its fabulous seafood.

The delicacies range from dried crabmeat and cuttlefish to sea urchin eggs, fresh prawns and salmon roe.

One of the participants, the Hasegawa family, has brought in a selection of its popular Atka mackerel fish alongside other dried seafood.

The mackerel is prized for its crispy skin and tender flesh.

A 35-time bestseller at the Ekiben competition in Tokyo, the Tanemura family’s famous Mori mo Ikameshi or Squid Stuffed with Rice, is selling for RM14 a box.

These are savoury creations where a glutinous rice is mixed with fragrant squid gravy and stuffed inside the seafood to be cooked.

But it is not all about seafood, as a selection of creamy Camembert Cheesecakes made with fresh cheese, eggs and milk is also offered.

Chef Kaneda’s desserts are also unique delicacies such as his signature Mont Blanc cake where a swirling mountain of chestnut cream tops a mixture of steamed chestnuts encased inside a pastry. The resulting taste is an interesting subtle sweetness.

Another speciality dessert is the Hokuyu-Sapporo Butter Steamed Buns baked with pure Hokkaido butter.

The buns are fluffy soft with creamy custard cream or red bean fillings oozing out from every bite.

Other delicacies for sale are the crispy Potato Croquette made from Dansyaku Potatoes mixed with vegetables, pumpkin and finely chopped beef, and the Hakodate Ramen noodles.
