Chinese rice wine and ginger are used generously in some Foochew-style specialities.
However, those who are not used to the robust taste of these ingredients may shy away from the dishes.
At Taste Haven, customers who favour these dishes can get quite a good selection such as the Red Wine Mee Suah, Red Wine Chicken Wing and Red Wine Chicken Fried Rice.
In the Red Wine Chicken Wing dish, the bird is prepared using a special technique that requires between 24 and 36 hours of marinating.
Red wine and soy sauce are among the ingredients used for the marinade.
According to restaurant manager Timothy Lim, only chicken thighs and wings are used in the recipe.
The marinated chicken pieces are then stored in the refrigerator until they are ready to be cooked.
They are then defrosted and fried to a nice, golden brown for that crispy texture.
Another interesting dish is the Red Wine Mee Suah, which comes with mee hoon- like noodles, chicken breast and a bulls-eye egg and garnished with spring onions and chopped ginger.
The Chicken Fried Rice also uses fried ginger and sesame oil, which gives the dish an overwhelming taste.
Pieces of chicken breast, mushrooms and beaten eggs are spread on top of the dish.
The Tapioca Mee, unique to the Hokkien community, is perhaps one dish that adventurous customers cannot miss.
The tangy and spicy sticky noodles are complemented with fish cakes, beansprouts, prawns, fried octopus, green and red chillies and spring onions.
Other dishes to look out for are the La La Porridge, which comes with plain white congee, La La Clams, La La Meehoon and Otak Otak Omelette.
After a hearty meal, one can choose from a variety of dessert ranging from homemade Barley Gingko, Sweet Wheat Congee and Water Chestnut Soup with honey to herbal jelly.
Taste Haven outlets are also in Bandar Baru Klang, Bandar Bukit Tinggi in Klang and Lapangan Merdeka in Section 52, Petaling Jaya.
The PJ outlet is under renovation while a new outlet will be opened in Kota Kemuning soon.
The restaurant is known for its decent home-cooked food, which attracts mainly families and diners who come in big groups.
