City Hall has started construction work on a 500m stretch to connect the Awan Besar Interchange from Kesas Highway to Taman OUG via Jalan Awan Besar.
Work to deepen and widen the drains have begun along with the laying of road shoulders and pavements.
When these have been done, the link will benefit thousands of residents who will have a direct route to Shah Alam and Kuala Lumpur.
Seputeh MP Teresa Kok said the project had been delayed for years because of problems associated with land acquisition.
“It will take about a year to build the link,” she said. “This is because the area is in a valley with a pond in its vicinity.”
Kok's personal assistant Khong Chee Seng said the project also included building another link that would connect Jalan Awan Jawa to Jalan Awan Besar.
“The current way of gettting to Jalan Awan Jawa, which leads to Taman Yarl, Taman Tan Yew Lai and condominiums such as Villa Banyan, Fortuna Court, OG Heights and Bukit OUG Condominium, only caters to traffic out of the neighbourhood,'' he said. “The new link will only be for traffic going in.''
Khong said the new link would, besides cutting travelling time and distance, curb congestion in the neighbourhood.
“Now, motorists use the Sri Petaling Carrefour way to get to Bukit Jalil,” he said, adding that with the link they could head directly to the Kesas highway.
