OPERATORS of eateries in Penang are now showing more interest in promoting cleaner premises.
This was evident when more came forward to participate in Penang Municipal Council’s Clean-liness and Beautification of Food Premises Competition 2005.
Participation was lukewarm in the beginning with only five out of over 800 eligible food operators signing up for the competition. Now the entries total 64.
Thanking the operators for the positive response, councillor Geeta Suresh Chand said she was setting a target of 70 entries and was confident it could be achieved before today’s closing date.

“Since the press highlighted the event, more operators have signed up and I hope those intending to register at the last minute will do so before 4.30pm today,” she said.
It was reported on June 16 that only five outlets had signed up for the competition even though there was no entry fee.
The food outlets will be judged from July 15 to Nov 15.
There are three categories- restaurants, coffee shops and food courts.
Prize money of RM2,000, RM1,500 and RM1000 await the top three in each category.
Besides general cleanliness, food handling and maintenance of premises, the outlets will also be judged on the atmosphere, such as brightness and ventilation and the availability of amenities like clean toilets and wash basins.
