IPOH City Council (MBI) should take effective steps to improve cleanliness of the Buntong market in Ipoh.

The market is always dirty and smelly.

One of the main factors for this is the unsatisfactory and ineffective cleaning by workers hired by MBI.

These cleaning operations are not frequent and consistent.

Another factor is the placement of a large waste bin beside one of the market’s entrances which emits bad smell around that area and also inside the market, especially when the lorry comes to collect the rubbish.

Lack of cleanliness of the Buntong market not only affects businesses there but also exposes customers and traders to diseases.

The freshness of products sold by traders in the market is also affected as the filth attracts pests. The market is also hot and humid due to its zinc roofing and lack of ceiling fans.

The water supply system within the market for the traders is bad, with only one tap located near the vegetable traders in working condition.

There is a dire need to instal more water pipes.

Another issue is irresponsible folk who dump unwanted pets at the market.

These animals loiter around the market’s food court section in search of leftover food.

Other irresponsible people also dump rubbish along roads surrounding the market.

To reduce the bad odour in the market, the city council should relocate the large waste bin to a location further from the market.

If no suitable location can be found, then MBI must ensure that the waste bin is cleaned regularly.

The city council should ensure strict and regular enforcement of cleaning operations in and out of the market.

To achieve a good level of cleanliness, cleaning operations should be done every day.

The authorities should ensure more ceiling fans are installed to reduce the heat and make the market more comfortable.

Signboards should be erected at strategic locations, reminding the public not to dump their pets at the market.

The relevant authorities should rescue those animals at the market and send them to animal shelters.

The city council should also place more rubbish bins around the market.

It is hoped that with these measures, the Buntong market will be a much cleaner place and there will be more patrons doing their marketing there.
