MALAYSIA is characterised by two monsoon seasons – the South-West Monsoon from late May to September, and the North-East Monsoon from November to March.

The North-East Monsoon brings heavy rainfall, particularly to the east coast states of peninsular Malaysia and western Sarawak.

This, however, does not mean that the west coast states are not affected, especially Port Dickson.

I hope the Port Dickson Municipal Council (MPPD) is prepared for the monsoon.

Damage from floodwater is one of the most common and costly hazards recent statistics have shown.

Sadly, for many house and business owners, losses due to damage from floodwater are not covered by insurance.

More than 90% of damage related to natural disasters are caused by damage from floodwater.

Nothing is immune and just a couple of inches of water could cause major damage to the your home or business.

Growing up in Port Dickson, I have noticed that the sea level has been on the rise and I suspect that floods here can only get worse.

On a positive note, I have also noticed that there are many unoccupied buildings that can be converted into temporary shelters for people affected by floods.
