A DEAR old friend K. Kanagandram, also known as Mr Bukit Bandaraya, once told me that he and his community in Bangsar were among the first Malaysians to organise a gotong-royong after the May 1969 riots.

Gotong-royong is a collaborative effort and a uniquely Malaysian practice that brings people together to make the impossible possible.
