PETALING JAYA Rangers will not have several seasoned players when they take on SAMB FC in the top of the table clash in the FAM Cup at the Petaling Jaya Stadium in Kelana Jaya tomorrow.
PJ Rangers deputy president Simon Lim said about five players were nursing injuries and were doubtful for the Group B clash.
But two of them – midfielders Mohd Shahril Izwan Abdullah and Fahrul Razi Kamaruddin – are certain to miss the match. But Simon was hoping for the other injured players to recover to join the starting 11.
“Mohd Shahril is nursing an ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) injury and will be out for the remaining season. Fahrul needs time to recover and get in shape for the competitive season. It is unfortunate as both Mohd Sharil and Fahrul were our main goal scorers in our previous matches.
“But we are looking ahead with optimism. It will be an excellent opportunity for the reserves to prove themselves. We are sure coach Mat Zan Mat Aris will prepare a strong line-up to match SAMB.
“SAMB have been impressive and strong in all departments. They ended Sime Darby’s unbeaten record. So we have to be cautious,’’ said Simon.
The FAM Cup took a two-week break for the international season. During the break, PJ Rangers played two friendly matches. The first was against Kuala Lumpur City Hall which they won 3-0 while the second was against Super League side Felda United. Felda United won 4-1.
But Simon believes the matches kept the players in competitive mood.
“With several players on the injured list, the coach had the chance to look at the reserves,’’ added Simon.
Both PJ Rangers and SAMB are unbeaten in the group. SAMB, coached by former international G. Thorairaju, are leading the seven-team Group B with eight points from two wins and two draws.
PJ Rangers, who have played one match less, are second on seven points from two wins and a draw.
In Group A, MOF FC will be looking to extend their unbeaten record when they meet MPKB-BRI-UBES at the Sultan Mohamad IV Stadium in Kota Baru.
MOF are leading the table with 10 points from three wins and a draw while MPKB-BRI-UBES are fifth with five points.
