The addition of 16 school teams at this year’s Victoria Institution Premier 10s Rugby Tournament (VI Premier 10s) is set to raise the level of the competition.

Victoria Institution Rugby Club (VIRC) president Nik Sidek Nik Jaffar said although he was expecting the competition to be tougher this year, the school aimed to be double champions by clinching the Under-15 and Under-17 categories.

“The school’s Under-17 team is expected to be a strong contender this year due to its impressive form lately,” he said, referring to the school’s achievement of being champions at the recent MSSKL Under-18 rugby tournament.

The ninth edition of the VI Premier 10s, to be co-organised by VIRC and the school, is set to discover more rugby talents at the school level.

“All the teams including those from overseas are expected to display high skills in a bid to uphold their schools’ reputation in this gentleman’s game,” said Nik Sidek.

The tournament, to be sanctioned by the Malaysian Rugby Union (MRU), will be held on the weekend of April 1 and 2 from 8am to 6pm at the VI Green on Jalan Hang Tuah, Kuala Lumpur.

Starting with a round-robin stage on the first day of the tournament, the qualifying teams will then proceed to the knockout stage on the second day.

The finals of the Fork, Spoon, Shield, Bowl, Plate and Cup categories will also be played during the final day of the tournament.

“For the first time this year, each winner from the categories will receive RM1,000 while each runner-up will receive RM500,” said Nik Sidek.

In last year’s tournament, Malay College Kuala Kangsar (MCKK) won the Under-17 category while SM Sains Hulu Selangor (SEMASHUR) won the Under-15 category.

The winning Under-17 team will get to lift the 24-karat gold plated G.E.D. Lewis Challenge Cup, named after one of VI’s principals who steered the school to various accolades including rugby.

“We hope that rugby enthusiasts, especially parents, will come to the VI Green on that day to support their favourite teams. Admission is free for all,” added Nik Sidek.

The teams that have confirmed their participation in this year’s tournament include RMC, KGV, SEMASHUR, St John’s Institution, Sekolah Dato Abd Razak, SM Sains Tunku Jaafar, MCKK, Sekolah Tunku Abdul Rahman (STAR) Ipoh, SMS Alam Shah (ASIS), SM Sains Selangor, SM Teknik KL, SBPI Gombak, King Edward VII of Taiping, SMK Sri Mersing, Malacca High School, STI Batu Pahat, SSAAS Shah Alam, MRSM Felda, Bengal Club, Intek, Integrasi Gombak, KL Saracens, KL Tigers, Intergrasi Jempol, SAS PutraJaya, English College, Akademi Ragbi Terengganu, Kosas and hosts, VI as well as Singapore’s St Andrew’s College.

This year’s tournament is supported by PRIVASIA, Kuala Lumpur City Hall, the Victoria Institution Old Boys Association (VIOBA) and the VIOBA Foundation, and sponsored by Cerebos, McDonald’s Malaysia, Nestle, PRAN, Home Direct, Revive and PSG.
