EMKAY-NPNG’s unbeaten run in the Football Association of Selangor (FAS) league came to an abrupt end last week.
Selangor Indian Association-PIB created an upset when they edged Emkay-NPNG 1-0 in a Group A match of the Super Division at the Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ) Sports Complex.
Emkay-NPNG coach Michael Palani said they did not field their regulars in the match.
“We had rested several seasoned players against SIA-PIB as we are in the midst of preparing for the FA Cup final.
“We wanted to avoid injuries or suspensions to our regulars. Nevertheless, the match against SIA-PIB gave us a chance to field our reserves. Some of them were in the starting 11 for the first time.
“SIA-PIB played well and scored from the chance that came their way. But we are not going to worry too much about the loss. We are looking ahead to the remaining matches.
“Based on our current position, we should not face any problem in making the quarter-finals of the Super division,” said Michael.
Emkay-NPNG have 12 points from four wins and a loss. Petaling Jaya Rangers, who were held to a 1-1 draw by Kuala Langat District Football Association, are second on 11 points followed by SIA-PIB (11 points) and SmartFocus (10 points).
In a Group B match at the PKNS Sports Complex in Kelana Jaya, PKNS showed great determination to upstage Teleflow 2-0.
PKNS took the lead in the fourth minute when Mohd Suhaili Abdul Rahman scored. PKNS’ second goal came in the first minute of the second half when Mohd Azfar Hamzah scored.
However Teleflow should be given credit for their fighting spirit. They also had several goal scoring opportunities but their strikers were unable to beat PKNS goalkeeper Muhmmad Asil Syafiq Sehrifodin.
PKNS team manager Mohd Zairy Zakaria congratulated their players on the win.
“The odds were against us as Teleflow had several young players and were strong with their quick counter attacks. They often caught us by surprise. The win has lifted the players’ spirit and we are now looking forward to the next match,” said Mohd Zairy.
PKNS have collected 15 points from six matches and are assured of a spot in the quarter-finals. Former champions PNSB maintained their winning streak in Group B when they edged Shah Alam City Council 2-1.
With 15 points from five wins, PNSB have also booked their spot in the last eight. Klang Gate M&R stayed in contention for a quarter-final berth when they defeated Anak Kalumpang 3-1. With 10 points, Klang Gate M&R will have to win their remaining match to join PKNS and PNSB in the quarter-finals.
In Division One, newcomers Batcha were held to a scoreless draw by SS Putra in a Group A match. However Batcha , who have completed their group obligations, have 16 points from five wins and a draw, and qualified for the second round.
SS Putra and Sinaran Bersatu are in the race for the remaining slot in Group A.
