Defending champs EMKAY-NPNG maintain unbeaten run

EMKAY-NPNG continued their winning ways in the Football Association of Selangor (FAS) league as they ended AirAsia’s unbeaten streak in the Super Division.

In a Group A match, played at the Subang Jaya Municipal Council Sports Complex, Emkay-NPNG, the defending champions edged AirAsia 2-1 to maintain their unbeaten record in the league.

It was an exciting match as both teams were eager to collect maximum points to stay in the race for the top four spots in Group A.

AirAsia started well and troubled the Emkay-NPNG defence but were unable to score past an alert Emkay-NPNG goalkeeper Mohd Zaidee Razlee.

Emkay-NPNG relied on quick counter-attacks. And they earned a penalty in the 28th minute.

Emkay-NPNG captain Mohd Raffi Mansor scored from the spot to give his team a 1-0 lead.

However, Emkay-NPNG joy was shortlived as AirAsia were on level terms three minutes later.

AirAsia were awarded a free kick and captain Mohd Syamsol Sabtu’s curling shot went beyond a rooted Emkay-NPNG goalkeeper Mohd Zaidee.

The match resumed with both teams looking for more goals. AirAsia had the edge but were unable to get the goals from the numerous chances created. Emkay-NPNG also have to thank goalkeeper Mohd Zaidee for his impressive game.

In the 80th minute, Emkay-NPNG scored a goal through Mohd Saufi Mohd Ibrahim to make it 2-1. AirAsia tried their best to get the equaliser but all their efforts failed and Emkay-NPNG walked away with maximum points.

Emkay-NPNG coach Michael Palani said they had expected a tough match and it was.

“But we managed to match them and get two goals. We are moving closer to a quarter-final berth. We have to be cautious as our rivals are also eager to get the better of us.

“The players are also aware of the situation and are determined to maintain our winning streak,” said Michael.

AirAsia coach T. Sivakumar said they should blame themselves for the defeat.

“We had the chances but did not score. But it was a valuable experience for us as we managed to match a seasoned Emkay-NPNG. We have to look forward to our next match with optimism and get the points,” said Sivakumar.

In other Group A matches, Smartfocus edged Team Force 3-2 and Sepang Municipal Council defeated Tanjung Karang 2-0.

Emkay-NPNG are leading the nine-team table with 12 points from four wins while AirAsia are second on 10 points.

Smartfocus also are third with 10 points.

In Group B, Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) fell to their first defeat after going down 2-1 to My World while PKNS edged Belia Selangor 2-1.

Meanwhile, the FA Cup final between Emkay-NPNG and Bukit Kapar will be played at the Subang Jaya Municipal Council sports complex on Feb 28.

FAS competition committee deputy president Datuk S. Sivasundram said the fans could look forward to an exciting match.

“For both Emkay-NPNG and Bukit Kapar, the road to the final was tough. Emkay-NPNG are the defending champions while Bukit Kapar are playing in the Premier Division.

"It will be an interesting encounter and we wish both the teams all the best,” said Sivasundram.
