EMKAY-NPNG showed their supremacy when they defeated newcomers Batcha in a second-round match of the Football Association of Selangor (FAS) FA Cup competition.
Emkay-NPNG, the defending champions, showed class in their 2-0 win over Batcha at the Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ) Sports Complex.
Emkay-NPNG had expected a tough match as Batcha had recruited several seasoned players with experience in the FAM Cup competition.
Before Batcha could settle down, Emkay-NPNG scored in the second minute. The goal came from a corner kick when an unmarked G. Rohan headed past a rooted Batcha goalkeeper Hanafi Rasu.
The early goal woke up Batcha and they relied on V. Gopi to get the equaliser. Gopi, who played for Megah Murni in the FAM Cup, did a lot of running but lacked support from his teammates.
Batcha were more interested in defending and did not want Emkay-NPNG to score more goals. At times the players from Batcha resorted to some robust tactics but the composed Emkay-NPNG lads were able to contain them.
Emkay-NPNG, who had won the Charity Shield, increased their lead to two goals in the 23rd minute. Once again, the goal came from a header. This time G. Sivachandran beat Hanafi with a sharp header from a free kick.
With the comfortable lead, Emkay-NPNG gained the momentum in the second half but were unable to score more goals.
Emkay-NPNG coach Michael Palani admitted that they were cautious as Batcha had several seasoned players.
“Batcha are newcomers to the FAS league but have sign several players with experience. Many had also played in the FAM Cup. So we could not be ambitious but we managed to get the early goal.
“It eased the pressure on the players and they played with confidence. We have cleared a tough hurdle and now are looking ahead to the next round,’’ added Michael.
Former champions PKNS, the Super Division runners-up, and Nilam Puri-Dengkil advanced to the fourth round after wins in the third round.
PKNS, one of the most consistent teams in the FAS League, were in an uncompromising mood when they defeated MPOB 6-0 while Nilam Puri-Dengkil upstaged Sri Remaja 2-0.
Sepang Muncipal Council (MPSp) started their campaign in the Super Division with 4-1 win over Team Force, last season’s runners-up in the FA Cup, in a Group A match. In Group B, Anak Kalumpang were lucky to collect maximum points after a slim 4-3 win over Teleflow.
However, the current rainy spell has also disrupted the league. Last weekend, 10 matches were called off due to bad weather.
FAS competition committee deputy chairman Datuk S. Sivasundram said they would have to reschedule the matches.
“It is unfortunate but it is something beyond our control. We have to look ahead with optimism and we hope the teams will be prepared for any eventuality arising from this situation.
“They may have to play midweek matches. We have to complete the season before the fasting month,’’ said Sivasundram.
