THREE teams – AirAsia Allstars, Shahzan Muda and Sungai Ara FC – are in contention for the two remaining quarter-final spots in the FAM Cup competition.
Six teams – two in Group A and four in Group B – have earned their places in the last eight of the two-group competition.
From Group A, Malaysian Indian Sports Council –Malaysian Indian Football Association (MISC-MIFA), who edged Megah Murni 1-0 at the BSN Sports Complex in Bangi, were assured of the top spot while Kuala Lumpur Felcra, despite going down 2-0 to Shahzan Muda at the Temerloh Municial Council Stadium, are in the second spot.
Irrespective of this weekend’s results, both MISC-MIFA and KL Felcra will finish as the champions and runners-up in Group A.
Sabah-based KDMM were assured of the fourth spot in Group B after contenders KL UKM FC were held to a 1-1 draw by Malaysian Malays at the UKM Sports Complex in Bangi. KDMM will join PKNP, KL MOF and Malacca Samb in the quarter-finals.
For AirAsia Allstars, Shahzan Muda and Sungai Ara FC , it is a tricky situation as all three have a bright chance of making the last eight.
AirAsia Allstars, who were held to a scoreless draw by Sungai Ara FC, will meet Shahzan Muda in their final group match at the Shah Alam Stadium tomorrow while Sungai Ara FC will travel to Kota Kinabalu to take on bottom- placed Sabah DYS.
AirAsia Allstars have 27 points, Sungai Ara FC 26 and Shahzan Muda 25. AirAsia Allstar’s team manager Hamdan Hashim said they are in a tough situation.
“We cannot afford to make any mistakes. We have to collect maximum points. Shahzan Muda are also in a tight situation. They too have to win to be certain of a last eight spot. The players are aware of the situation and hope to see them get their act right,’’ said Hamdan.
MISC-MIFA team manager S. Arumugam was happy with their players’ performance against Megah Murni.
MISC-MIFA’s only goal came from M. Yoges in the 27th minute.
Arumugam said they were looking forward to completing their preliminary rounds on a winning note when they meet Ipoh Football Association at the USIM Sports Complex in Nilai tomorrow.
“We have advised the players to maintain their winning streak to boost their confidence for the quarter-finals,’’ added Arumugam.
