Hot basketball action awaits Penangites

Ooi says the tournament will feature five foreign teams which will be joining one Malaysian team.

SIX teams will take part in the 3rd Penang Chief Minister Cup International Basketball Invitation Championship from June 3 to 7 at the Han Chiang Indoor Stadium.

Penang Basketball Association president Ooi Khoon Yeong said five of the teams were foreign.

They are the Zhejiang Chouzhou Basketball Club from China, Chien Hsin University of Science and Technology from Taiwan, Karnataka State Team from India, PEA Basketball Club from Thailand and Blackwater Elite from the Philippines.

They will be joining Malaysia Dragons from Malaysia.

Ooi said the five-day basketball tournament was aimed at promoting the game and boosting tourism in Penang.

“The foreign players will have the chance to visit tourist spots in George Town and also sample our tasty hawker food,” he told a press conference at the state assembly building on Wednesday.

He added that basketball clinics would be conducted at selected schools by foreign coaches to mark the tournament.

Penang Youth and Sports Committee chairman Chong Eng, who was present at the press conference, said local basketball players would have the opportunity to watch the international teams in action.

“This will help improve the standard of basketball in the state.”

Tickets are priced at RM70 for the general public and RM35 for students.

The single day entry ticket is RM20 each for all. The first 100 students to purchase tickets will get a pair of LiNing socks.
