LAGENDA Football Club wants to play a role in the promotion and development of football at the grassroots.
The Malacca based club will be organising the fifth edition of the SportsUnite Samba Bola Under-12 football carnival at the Rotunda Football ground at Malacca Club on May 29.
The champions of the seven-a-side football carnival will receive the Datuk Soh Chin Aun challenge trophy.
Lagenda Football Club secretary Deno Tan said they were pleased to organise the carnival to honour Chin Aun.
“He is from Malacca and also the patron of Lagenda Football Club. He also has an impressive record as a player for Malaysia and Malacca. He is also supportive of our efforts and will be present during the carnival.
“His presence will certainly add glamour as well as inspire the players and their parents,’’ said Deno.
The carnival is organised by Lagenda Football Club and SportsUnite Sports Club with support from the Rotunda Malacca Club, National Sports Council, Milo, Revive Isotonic Drinks. Figos and Airgoal.
Chin Aun, who was present at the launch of the carnival in Kuala Lumpur, was happy to be part of the meaningful event.
“I was informed that the response has been overwhelming. I am happy with the great response. The carnival is important for two things. It promotes unity and gives the young kids an opportunity to play in a competitive environment.
“The more competitions the better for children to gain good experience and learn new skills in the game. Too much training can take the fun out of the game in our children. I am sure this event will see some new talents discovered,’’ said Chin Aun.
Last year, a total 24 teams took part. However this year, the organisers have decided to increase the number of teams to 32. The top eight teams will receive winners’ medals and sponsor’s products including jerseys and footballs.
