SMART FOCUS had reasons to celebrate after PKNS beat Belia Selangor B in a Group B match of the Super Division in the Football Association of Selangor (FAS) league.
Belia Selangor B, who were represented by the FAS development squad, needed a win to strengthen their claim for a top four spot in Group B.
However PKNS, who had already booked their place in the quarter-finals, edged Belia Selangor B 2-1 in their final group match at the PKNS Sports Complex in Kelana Jaya.
Belia Selangor B, with one match in hand, have seven points while Smart Focus, with two matches left, have 13 points and are assured of a place in the last eight.
The match was an interesting one as Belia Selangor B, aware of the situation, started by aggressively looking for an early goal.
However, PKNS, considered one of the pioneer teams in the league, were not prepared to give Belia Selangor B the upperhand.
After several missed chances, PKNS took the lead in the 36th minute when captain Mohd Firdaus Haron scored. However Belia Selangor B were on level terms within three minutes through Deva Rabisanthiran.
The second half resumed with both PKNS and Belia Selangor B having an equal share of the game. But the more experienced players in PKNS had the final say in the 78th minute when Mohamad Jeffri Jusoh scored.
The top four teams in Group B have been decided. PKNS are leading the nine team group with 19 points. Newly crowned FA Cup champions Emkay-NPNG, with a match in hand, are second on 18 points while Sultan Sulaiman Club are third with 14 points and Smart Focus are fourth.
Emkay-NPNG coach Michael Palani said they would be going for a win when they meet Smart Focus in their last group match.
“We would like to get maximum points and top the group. After winning the FA Cup, we are in the right frame of mind to take on Smart Focus,’’ said Michael.
